Minnesota Swim and Vibe is in the early phases of initiating a lobbying effort with the Minnesota State legislature to address the rampant lack of donuts for Saturday swim practices. What was once a given, has now become a rare occurrence across the state.
MSV sees this disturbing trend as not only detrimental to swimmers’ mental well-being, but a threat to a swimmer’s basic rights. Under the proposed legislation, conducting a Saturday morning swim practice without donuts available for all participants will be considered a gross misdemeanor and subject to a substantial fine or 400 IM/200 Fly combo for those responsible. Detailed language is still being discussed, but there is strong support for not counting donut holes or donettes as donuts.
When contacted for comment, a state representative, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, responded “I have no idea what you are talking about. Who comes up with this stuff? I think I need to reconsider my support for the legalization of marijuana “
Obviously, some education needs to be done in the community, but MSV stands firm in the belief that donuts are a cornerstone of Saturday morning practices and continuing to turn a blind eye to their disappearance is irresponsible.
