Yes, we all swim, we all compete, and we all have fun. Those are the general aspects of a swim team. When you look a little deeper though, you find every team is a little different. They have their own interesting history, their own methods, and that special something that makes them unique. Minnesota Swim and Vibe looks to shed some light on what that is for clubs across the state. Today we look at South Metro Swim Club.
South Metro Storm Swim Club was founded in 1999 when the Lakeville and Prior Lake swim teams merged into one club. During this time, Phil Smith, one of the head coaches at Storm currently, started working with the team part time. A few years later, in 2003, Coach Phil joined as a full time coach, and the following year, current Head Coach Chuck Smith joined the team in 2004. At the time, Storm Swim Club had less than 100 swimmers.
Over many years, Storm Swim Club has seen tremendous growth in their program from where they began! This year, the club is proud to have over 400 swimmers and 750 participants in Storms swim lessons program. The coaching staff has also expanded significantly, from just three coaches back then to now having 11 club coaches and around 40 seasonal lesson teachers.
At Storm Swim Club, each coach understands that each swimmer’s journey is unique and they are at different points in their careers. Many competitive swimmers are aiming for Bronze, MRC, State cuts, Zone cuts, and even Junior National cuts, while others are simply preparing for their upcoming High School Swim season. As well, many swimmers at Storm simply look to stay fit and make new friends within the sport of swimming! Storm Swim Club believes that there’s a place and importance for everyone, regardless of their goals or aspirations in the sport. Inclusivity is of huge importance to Storm Swim Club and is something the club strives for to ensure that every swimmer feels welcome and supported through their swimming experience.
One unique aspect that Storm Swim Club portrays within their program for athletes is emphasizing the importance of having fun while working hard. Storm coaches believe that when you enjoy what you’re doing, you can achieve so much more. When success is reached at the end of the season championship meets, many teammates at Storm mention how much fun they had during the season. Fun is not just a bonus when swimming; it’s a key part of a swimmer’s success.
All of the Storm Swim Club coaches lead by example for our athletes in and out of the pool. The coaches understand the importance of lifelong fitness, and many of them make sure to stay active even after school hours. They lead by example, showing our swimmers that staying physically active is not only rewarding but also essential for a healthy lifestyle.
Storm Swim Club is more than just a swim team. It’s a community that supports and encourages every individual, no matter their swimming goals. With Storm’s expanding team, focus on fun, and commitment to lifelong fitness, Storm Coaches believe that swimmers will not only reach their potential but also gain lasting memories and friendships along the way!
