Team Outlook

Section 2A graduates a couple of state champions in Piper Crosby from Breck and Carly Bixby of Blake, but there is still plenty of talent across the board.  Breck will be the favorite after winning by a comfortable 100+ points in 2023.  They will be led by Senior Ava Allingham.  Allingham was section champion in the 200 IM and 100 Breast and placed 2nd and 4th respectively in those events at the state meet.  Junior Evelyn Allen was section runner-up last year in the 100 Fly and placed 12th at the state meet in that event.  Sophomore Amelia Wachs placed 3rd in both the 200 and 500 Free at sections and followed that up with 15th and 14th place finishes the following week at state.    Senior Hayden Dahlof returns after a 5th place finish in the 100 Free and 200 IM.  Juniors Annie Chi, Sadie Plut, and Greta Wilson all return top 8 section finishers from 2023.  Chi placed 7th in the 200 IM, Plut was 4th in the 50 Free and 3rd in the 100 Fly and Wilson 5th in the 50 Free and 3rd in the 100 Free.  Sophomores Anna Russ and Max Vollmer round out the group.  Vollmer placed 7th in the 200 Free and 6th in the 500 Free while Russ placed 4th in the 100 Free.

Benilde St. Margaret’s looks to be the closest challenger this season, led by junior Emma Rudowsky.  She is defending champion in the 200 and 500 Free where she placed 10th and 4th in those events at the state meet.  Joining Rudowsky at the top is senior Harriet White.  White placed 3rd in the 200 IM and 2nd in the 500 Free at the section meet and went on to place 11th at the state meet in the 500.  Sophomore Bailey Monette returns to defend her section championship in diving and was runner up at the state meet.  Senior Siri Gudmundson faired well at the 2023 section meet, placing 6th in the 50 Free and 2nd in the 100 Free.  Junior Lillian Schilling was also a double top 8 finisher at sections last year with a 4th place finish in both the 200 Free and 100 Fly.  Sophomore Rachel Bett returns after placing 6th in the 100 Free and 3rd in the 100 Breast.  Finally, junior Sylvia White placed 8th in the 500 Free and 6th in the 100 Back in 2023 and will look to move up in those events in 2024.

Blake will not quietly give up the second spot in the section by any means.  Although losing some of their frontline swimmers to graduation, they return Senior Karin Lund who placed 2nd in the 200 Free and 4th in the 500 Free last season.  Lund placed 13th in the 500 at state.  Junior Mercy March also fared well at sections in 2023 with runner-up finishes in both the 200 IM and 100 Breast.  March placed 16th in the IM and 13th in the Breast at state.  Fellow junior Hayden Wert placed 7th in the 50 Free and 9th in the 100 Free at the section meet and will be a key part of the relays this year.  Sophomore Larsen Winternheimer placed 7th in the 100 Breast last season and will be fighting with a competitive field for a top 4 spot this year.  Junior diver Sosie Simon placed 6th at sections and will be aiming for one of the top 4 spots and looking for her first appearance at the state meet in 2024.

Other Notables

St. Anthony Village seniors Josie Bossen, Maiya Garcia, and Bridget Myers will lead the way this year for their squad.  Bossen placed 2nd in diving, Garcia racked up a 2nd place finish in the 50 Free and 3rd place finish in the 100 Back and Myers was 3rd in the 200 Free and 5th in the 100 Back.  They should provide a solid core in 2024.  Junior diver Sonja Oksnevad placed 7th in diving last year and with a few graduating ahead of her, will be in the mix for a top 4 spot.

Keep an eye on the freshman from Bloomington Kennedy, Kaylee Von Ruden.  Von Ruden placed 8th in the 200 IM and 4th in the 100 Back as an 8th grader and will look to continue to rise up the rankings this year.

Fridley’s Morgan Erickson finished 6th in both the 200 IM and 100 Breast in 2023 and will be looking to improve on those places this season.

Minnehaha Academy-Cristo Rey returns their entire squad from last season and will look to add from their section point total from last year.

Columbia Heights will look to continue to rebuild after a couple of years with smaller squads.
