As the new Head Coach of the Wildcats, this season marks an exciting beginning for Jordyn Wentzel, especially after last year’s remarkable achievements. The team recently clinched a 2nd place finish at the MIAC Championships and recorded 135 career-best times—a testament to their dedication and hard work.
Transitioning into this role, the challenge will be to build upon the foundation laid by notable graduates such as Anneke van Oosterom, Gillian Durand, Andrea Voelker, and Sammi Friedrich. These four student-athletes not only excelled in the pool as multiple-time MIAC All-Conference honorees, but they were also exceptional in the classroom, paving the way for graduate studies. Their leadership and contributions will undoubtedly be missed, but their legacy will inspire the returning athletes.
The Wildcats are fortunate to have a strong core of returning athletes poised to make a significant impact this season. Senior Emma Svendsen, an NCAA Qualifier in 2023 and MIAC Co-Swimmer of the Meet in 2024, is expected to lead by example in her final year. Senior J Dombroski, who scored 43 points last season, along with Natalie Chandler, who made impressive strides in the 100 fly, are ready to elevate their performances. Additionally, Olivia Weil, Ella Hochstetler, and rising sophomores Jordyn Grotbo and Shea Bradley will all play vital roles, bringing experience and talent to the team.
This season also brings the exciting addition of divers, a first for the Wildcats in four years. The coaching staff is eager to revitalize the diving program and integrate new swimmers who are eager to make their mark on the MIAC. This infusion of talent will be crucial for maintaining the team’s competitive edge.
At the heart of the Wildcats program lies a commitment to hard work, coachability, and teammate support. Coach Wentzel emphasizes the importance of fostering an environment where every athlete, regardless of class year, has the opportunity to take on leadership roles. This collaborative culture is further strengthened by team-building activities outside the pool, promoting camaraderie and growth.
Academics remain a priority as well, with upperclassmen mentoring younger teammates to help them navigate their studies. This holistic approach ensures that athletes are not just excelling in swimming but are also growing as individuals.
One standout feature of the Wildcats program is the innovative token system, designed to celebrate personal achievements. Each time an athlete records a best time, they receive a token, which accumulates throughout the season. This practice not only fosters a fun and supportive atmosphere but also encourages athletes to track their progress. Last season alone, the team handed out an impressive 304 tokens, a reflection of their commitment to continuous improvement.
As the Wildcats embark on this new season, the blend of seasoned talent and fresh faces promises to create a dynamic and competitive environment. Coach Wentzel is excited to see how the team evolves, uniting in their pursuit of excellence both in the pool and in their academic endeavors. With a strong foundation, a collaborative culture, and a commitment to personal growth, the Wildcats are ready to make waves this season.
