Minnesota State University Moorhead’s (MSUM) swimming and diving program has become synonymous with hard work, academic success, and building a sense of community among athletes. This season, the team looks to continue its tradition of excellence, despite saying goodbye to one of its standout athletes, Arina Bratamijaja, who graduated and is now pursuing her PhD at Kent State University.
The absence of Bratamijaja will certainly be felt, as she was not only a leader in the pool but also a guiding force for her teammates. “We will miss her leadership and guidance,” said Head Coach Charlie King. Bratamijaja embodied the values that MSUM holds dear—passion, commitment, and dedication to both academics and athletics. As the team moves into the new season, Coach King will look to his experienced upperclassmen to fill the leadership void and help shape the younger swimmers.
While leadership will shift to the returning upperclassmen, the team is excited to have contributions from every athlete on the roster. Coach King emphasizes the importance of each swimmer playing a key role in the team’s success. “We look for every teammate to have a role and contribute,” explains King.
The Dragons’ upperclassmen will be crucial in mentoring the talented incoming class of first-year swimmers. With “big personalities” and a vibrant energy, the new recruits are expected to quickly acclimate and make their mark in the pool. The team is optimistic about their potential to contribute to a variety of events. “We will be looking for them to step up in practice and contribute in several events,” adds King.
MSUM’s swimming and diving program looks for more than just fast swimmers. Coach King seeks well-rounded individuals who excel academically and embody a strong desire to compete while pursuing their degree. “We look for great people who are passionate about seeking a degree and competing while doing it,” says King. Confidence, commitment, and a relentless drive to improve both in and out of the water are qualities that set Dragon athletes apart.
At the heart of the MSUM program lies a core philosophy: Trust, Love, and Commitment. Coach King aims to foster an environment where athletes are held to the highest standards, but also support each other’s success. “We try and build a culture where achieving your best is the standard and contributing to others’ success is just as important,” he explains. The team strives to be excellent not only in athletics but also in academics and life.
One of the defining aspects of the MSUM swimming and diving program is the focus on life lessons that extend far beyond the pool. Athletes learn how to manage a busy schedule, balance life’s priorities, and commit to something bigger than themselves. The program encourages swimmers to embrace challenges and learn from failure, building resilience and the confidence to overcome obstacles. “You will learn how to manage a complicated schedule, balance life priorities, commit to something bigger than yourself, move forward after failing, and contribute in a team environment,” Coach King emphasizes.
As the Dragons dive into a new season, the mix of seasoned leadership and energetic newcomers creates a sense of excitement around the program. With a culture rooted in excellence, trust, and commitment, MSUM swimming and diving is well-positioned for success, both in and out of the water.
