A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John’s won five events in a 182-116 loss at Wisconsin-La Crosse last Saturday (Nov. 8).
Senior Brayden Slavik (Green Isle, Minn./Chaska) led the Johnnies with three individual wins, including a 35-year-old, pool-record time of 16:14.22 in the 1,650-yard freestyle. He also took first in the 400-yard individual medley (4:13.49) and 500-yard freestyle (4:54.21).
Freshman Vincent Schulze (Eden Prairie, Minn.), meanwhile, collected three top-three finishes. He was victorious in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.39) and claimed second in the 100-yard freestyle (49.27) and third in the 50-yard freestyle (22.30).
Junior Cody Watts (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) won the 1-meter dive (279.65) and finished second on the 3-meter board (200.65), just ahead of sophomore Henry Hilgendorf (Owatonna, Minn.) in third (200.25).
Senior Clay Megaw (Monticello, Minn.) placed second in both the 100- (1:01.70) and 200-yard (2:18.66) breaststrokes, while junior Trevor Barton (Buffalo, Minn.) runner-up to Slavik in the 500- (5:08.55) and 1,650-yard (17:45.46) freestyles.
Senior Carsten Reuter (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) claimed second in the 50-yard freestyle (22.00) and freshman Braydon Ohrtman (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) was second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.83) and third in the 100-yard freestyle (50.05). Senior Andrew Roggeman (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) touched the wall third in the 100-yard backstroke (59.25).
SJU’s 200-yard freestyle relay (Reuter, Lammers, Schulze, Slavik) took second (1:29.29) and the 400-yard medley (Roggeman, Megaw, Lammers, Reuter) was third (3:45.61).
SWIMMER OF THE WEEK, AGAIN: Slavik was named the MIAC Men’s Swimming Athlete of the Week on Tuesday (Nov. 11) for his performance at La Crosse. The honor was the third of the season and ninth of his career.
A LOOK AT THE HUSKIES: St. Cloud State posted a 198-97 win at St. Thomas last Saturday (Nov. 8) in St. Paul. The Huskies won 15 of the 16 events (all 15 events they had an entry in). Junior Lance Godard was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Swimmer of the Week after he took first in the 100- (48.28) and 200-yard (1:48.91) butterfly. Three other Huskies won two events each: freshman Bernardo Mier y Teran Eljure in both the 500- (4:37.92) and 1,000-yard (9:41.46) freestyles; junior Reid Tigges in the 50 (19.91) and 100-yard (45.02) freestyles; and sophomore Marcus Walker in the 100- (56.65) and 200-yard (2:03.36) breaststrokes.
LAST SEASON’S DUAL: SJU dropped last season’s dual to St. Cloud State, 180.5-115.5, on Jan. 18 (2025) in the Warner Palaestra Pool. The Johnnies won six events and totaled 18 top-three performances.
The reigning MIAC Men’s Swimming and Diving Athletes of the Week at the time – Slavik and Eli Grabinski ’25, respectively – continued their prowess with a combined five wins on the day. Slavik claimed first place in three individual events by a combined 1:00.88: the 200-yard individual medley (1:58.36, by 0:02.78); 500-yard freestyle (4:44.39, by 0:09.84); and 1,000-yard freestyle (9:48.01, by 0:48.26).
Grabinski, meanwhile, swept both boards by taking first in the 1- (284.75) and 3-meter (297.00) dives. Watts was third in the 1-meter event (279.35).
Megaw was responsible for the Johnnies’ sixth win in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.36). He also took second in the 200-yard version (2:15.79).
Carter Larson ’25 claimed second in the 100-yard freestyle (47.80), while he and classmate Colby Kern ’25 were second (1:45.62) and third (1:46.77), respectively, in the 200-yard freestyle.
Reuter touched the wall second in the 50-yard freestyle (22.12) and Langston Philion ’25 and Jake Tschida ’25 took second (2:03.56) and third (2:22.22) in the 200-yard butterfly.
Connor Thayer ’25 and sophomore Riley Yerks (Hutchinson, Minn.) placed third in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:46.93) and 200-yard backstroke (2:07.73), respectively.
The Johnnies’ 200-yard freestyle (Noble, Larson, Reuter, Kern) finished second (1:26.06) and the 200-yard medley (Noble, Megaw, Kern, Larson) was third (1:37.86).
MIAC’S TOP TIMES: The Johnnies currently boast 22 top-eight times in the MIAC this season, including nine of the fastest (two by Reuter and seven by Slavik).
