Big Swims, Big Win: Waconia Tops Delano–Watertown–Mayer

Waconia flexed its depth in the individual events and dominance in the relays to earn a 115–70 varsity victory over Delano–Watertown–Mayer. The Wildcats set the tone early and steadily built separation as the meet progressed, while Delano–Watertown–Mayer found success in select events but struggled to keep pace with Waconia’s scoring depth.

The meet opened with Waconia striking first in the 200 Medley Relay. The A relay of Drew Kearney, Sam Swanson, Michael Sower, and Kael Herrera touched first in 1:45.73, immediately establishing momentum. Delano–Watertown–Mayer followed with its A relay in 1:48.75 and added points with its B relay, but Waconia’s early relay win set the tone.

Delano–Watertown–Mayer responded in the 200 Freestyle as MacKay Hoglund controlled the race to win in 1:58.84. Waconia answered with a strong group behind him, led by Brady Jamison (2:05.05) and Wes Weirauch (2:05.85), limiting the damage and keeping the overall score in Waconia’s favor.

Waconia took control in the 200 IM, sweeping the top three spots behind Sam Swanson (2:08.52), Drew Kearney (2:13.69), and Nick Grotbo (2:15.17). That sweep created one of the biggest point swings of the meet and pushed the Wildcats further ahead.

Sprint speed continued to favor Waconia in the 50 Freestyle. Henry Kleve delivered the fastest swim of the night in 21.92, followed by teammate Michael Sower (23.40). Delano–Watertown–Mayer stayed competitive through Henry Becker (23.61), but Waconia added valuable depth points to extend its lead.

Delano–Watertown–Mayer found a bright spot on the diving boards, where Oliver Sathre won the 1-meter event with a score of 167.08. Waconia countered with a strong second-place finish from Connor McCarthy (155.20), keeping the overall margin steady.

The 100 Butterfly swung back toward Waconia as Henry Kleve doubled up with a win in 56.49, while Nick Grotbo added a third-place finish. Delano–Watertown–Mayer’s Luke Grosshuesch placed second (1:00.21), but Waconia continued to stack points.

Waconia controlled the 100 Freestyle as well, with Maitrey Gulati touching first in 51.04, followed by Brady Jamison (54.82). Delano–Watertown–Mayer countered with points from MacKay Hoglund (54.56), but the Wildcats’ depth again proved decisive.

Distance racing belonged to Waconia in the 500 Freestyle. Michael Sower earned a convincing win in 5:19.51, while Delano–Watertown–Mayer answered with Henry Becker (5:23.30) and Gus Bandzuch (6:01.59) scoring behind him. Waconia added points from Kael Herrera to maintain its advantage.

The Wildcats delivered another major swing in the 200 Free Relay. The A relay of Henry Kleve, Maitrey Gulati, Brady Jamison, and Drew Kearney surged to victory in 1:35.24, further widening the gap over Delano–Watertown–Mayer’s A relay (1:39.10).

Waconia continued its strong showing in the 100 Backstroke, sweeping the top two spots behind Sam Swanson (58.26) and Drew Kearney (1:00.03). Delano–Watertown–Mayer picked up points through Harrison Merten, but the Wildcats’ backstroke depth proved costly.

Delano–Watertown–Mayer earned another highlight in the 100 Breaststroke as Luke Grosshuesch won in 1:04.02. Waconia stayed close with Jacob Yarger (1:09.17) and Wes Weirauch (1:11.20), preventing any late momentum shift.

The meet closed with Waconia putting an exclamation point on the night in the 400 Free Relay. The A relay of Henry Kleve, Michael Sower, Maitrey Gulati, and Sam Swanson touched first in 3:24.36, sealing the 115–70 victory.
