MINNEAPOLIS — The final day of competition at the MIAC Championships saw Jackson Rankin win the 200-yard butterfly as the Carleton College men’s swimming & diving team finished second in the team standings. The Knights combined for eight all-conference or all-conference honorable mention swims on Saturday.
Rankin posted a winning time of 1:51.56, eclipsing his own team record. He is the first Carleton swimmer to win an event at this year’s conference meet, while diver Hans Anderson swept the MIAC crowns in 1- and 3-meter diving earlier this week.
Gustavus Adolphus captured its seventh consecutive conference team title with 953 points. Carleton was next at 628.5, followed by both Saint John’s and Macalester at 497.5. St. Olaf and Hamline rounded out the field with 426 and 181 points.
Carson Rotter earned All-MIAC status as he finished third in the 1650-yard freestyle after covering the distance in 16:33.51. Matthew Krogman received All-Conference Honorable Mention with a fourth-place finish at 16:41.13. Both Knights established collegiate bests.
Nicholas Chang took home All-MIAC Honorable Mention after finishing fifth in the 200-yard backstroke. He clocked a personal-best time of 1:54.91. Dawson Lee and Aaron Zhao reached the wall with collegiate-best times of 2:00.82 and 2:00.86, respectively, to place 11th and 12th.
Carleton had four swimmers race in the “B” final of the 100-yard freestyle. Neil Tollefson (47.29), Leif Petricka (47.91), Noah Lee (48.16), and Thor Pearson (48.60) finished 12th through 15th, respectively. All four swam collegiate bests during the preliminary round, clocking times of 47.27, 47.80, 48.09, and 48.49, respectively.
Cam Newton (collegiate-best 2:07.71) and Alex Lee (2:08.03) picked up All-MIAC Honorable Mention in the 200-yard breaststroke after finishing in fourth and fifth places, respectively. Jeffrey Kong (2:11.15) and Luke Schmitzer (2:11.46) swam to 10th and 11th place finishes, respectively, as they established new collegiate bests
Joining Rankin as point scorers in the 200-yard butterfly were Warren Kozak and Aiden Johnson. The former secured All-MIAC Honorable Mention after placing fifth at 1:56.12. The latter took eighth with a time of 1:57.88.
The Knights concluded the conference meet with a fourth-place result in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Tollefson, Kozak, Noah Lee, and Petricka combined on a time of 3:08.99 as they earned All-MIAC Honorable Mention.
