
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester College women’s swimming & diving team put several swimmers into the finals on Day 2 of the MIAC Swimming & Diving Championships, held at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center Thursday evening. The Scots moved up two spots from Wednesday into third place in the team standings with 210.5 points.
Five Scots qualified for the finals in the 500-yard freestyle, including three in the A final. Sophomore Molly Nuckolls (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) placed second with a time of 5:10.73, followed closely by senior Hannah Zurn (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) in third in 5:11.50. Both Nuckolls and Zurn earned All-MIAC recognition for their top-3 finishes. First year Jay Young (Arlington, Va.) also made the A final and took seventh with a time of 5:14.61. Sophomore Annika Hensel (Houston, Texas/St. John’s School) and first year Ella Franklin (Tucson, Ariz./University) swam in the B final and finished 12th and 13th, respectively. In all the Scots totaled 54 points in the 500 free.
In the 200-yard individual medley, sophomore Maya Téllez (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) finished second with a time of 2:10.38 to earn All-MIAC honors. Senior Izzy Uhlhorn-Thornton (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) was fifth in 2:12.27 and received All-MIAC honorable mention. In the B final, sophomore Carolyn Wolking (Micanopy, Fla./Santa Fe College) and first year Poppy Wedding (Madison, Wis./Middleton) took 12th and 13th, respectively. In the 50-yard freestyle, senior Emma Henry (Chesapeake, Va./Oscar Smith) tied for fourth with a time of 24.24 for All-MIAC honorable mention, while sophomore Amalia Shields (Madison, Wis./Madison West) placed 14th.
Macalester’s 400-yard medley relay team of Henry, Uhlhorn-Thornton, Zurn and Téllez took fifth with a time of 3:58.21.
The MIAC Championships continue on Friday, with sessions at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
