KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Carleton College divers Nina Schwab and Hailey Westrup competed at the NCAA Region 1 Championships this weekend.
Schwab secured her spot at the upcoming NCAA Division III Championships as she finished second on the 1-meter board with a score of 445.75 and won the 3-meter competition with 479.90 points. Meanwhile, Westrup was one of two divers in consideration for the region’s final bid to Nationals but lost out due to a tiebreaker. She will be the first alternate should one of the region’s nine qualifiers not compete.
Region 1 is allotted nine of the 29 berths in the diving portion of the NCAA D-III Championships. After the first eight spots were allocated, Westrup and Hope College’s Laura Zupancic were next up for consideration. Westrup finished seventh on the 1-meter board and 13th on the 3-meter board, while Zupanic was seventh on the 3-meter board (422.35) and 14th on the 1-meter (373.2). Since both placed seventh on one board, the tiebreaker compares the divers combined 1- and 3-meter scores, which gave Zupanic (795.55 total score) the edge over Westrup (775.50) for the region’s final berth to Nationals.
On the lower board, Schwab earned at least 40 points on seven dives, including a 54.60-point performance for her Forward 2 1/2 Somersault Pike (105B). During the 3-meter event, Schwab had six dives worth at least 40 points, with four of those earning at least 50 points. Her top dive of the weekend (Forward 3 1/2 Somersault Tuck — 107C) earned a whopping 58.80 points.
During Friday’s 1-meter event, Westup performed three dives that scored at least 40 points with a high of 44.40 points on her Forward 2 1/2 Somersault Tuck (105C). Her high score on the 3-meter board was 44.55 for her 405C (Inward 2 1/2 Somersault Tuck).
