Barnes Thought of the Week

Hungry… and Thankful

Now that I’ve a coaching almost 40 years and the last 30 with same club, I’ve found myself looking back more than usual.

And one thing keeps coming to mind:

One of the hardest things for driven people to hold onto… is gratitude.

Because ambition, by its nature, is always whispering:

What’s next?

What’s more?

How far can I go?

The next standard.

The next promotion.

The next level.

And listen—that fire?

That’s not the enemy.

That fire builds things.

It moves teams.

It changes lives.

But if you’re not careful…

that same engine that pushes you forward

can quietly steal your ability

to appreciate how far you’ve already come.

I’ve seen it on the pool deck.

I’ve lived it myself.

A swimmer drops time… and within minutes

they’re frustrated it wasn’t more.

A coach hits a milestone… and immediately

shifts to what’s still missing.

Good people doing meaningful work—

still feeling behind.

That’s the treadmill talking.

And it’s always moving… whether you realize it or not.

And here’s the truth most high achievers learn the hard way:

Gratitude and ambition are not opponents.

They’re teammates.

Gratitude without ambition?

That’s where complacency lives.

That’s where growth stalls.

But ambition without gratitude?

That’s a race with no finish line.

You run hard.

You achieve a lot.

And somehow… it still never feels like enough.

The sweet spot—

the place strong, grounded people learn to live—

is right in the middle.

You can be hungry…

and thankful.

You can chase what’s next…

while still respecting what got you here.

You can want more…

without acting like what you have doesn’t matter.

That’s not weakness.

That’s maturity.

That’s perspective.

That’s the whole game.

So this week…

Keep your edge.

Keep your standards high.

Keep chasing what’s next.

But every once in a while—

look back down the lane.

Trust me, there’s a lot behind you

that once lived in your prayers.

Take Care,

John
