Minnesota Garners Trio of Big Ten Weekly Awards

Three student athletes for the University of Minnesota swimming and diving programs earned Big Ten honors this afternoon following their performance at The Dual Meet Tournament last weekend. Junior Katie McCarthy has been named this week’s Swimmer of the Week, freshman Kayla Barr was named this week’s Freshman of the Week, and senior Drew Bennett was named  Diver of the Week.

 

McCarthy collected six individual event wins throughout the course of the tournament, helping lead the Gophers to a fifth place overall finish. She tallied first place finishes in the 500 free (4:46.40) and 200 IM (1:58.91) over No. 20 Auburn and first place finishes in the 200 fly (1:58.44) and 500 free (4:47.17) over George Washington University. McCarthy went on to close out the tournament with another pair of first place finishes in the 200 fly (1:59.06) and 500 free (4:50.20) over Georgia Tech. This marks her first Big Ten honor of the season and of her career.

 

Barr played a major role in helping the Gophers earn a 581-208 victory over George Washington University and a 445-345 victory over Georgia Tech, collecting her first collegiate individual event win in the 200 IM (2:02.67) over GWU. This also marks her first Big Ten honor of the season and of her career.

 

Bennett collected three individual event wins throughout the tournament, tallying a first place finish in the 3-meter diving event (181.50) over No. 20 Auburn before earning first place finishes in the 1-meter (193.80) and 3-meter (193.50) diving events over George Washington University. This marks his first Big Ten honor of the season and fourth of his career.

 

The University of Minnesota women will head to Iowa City to take on the Hawkeyes before both programs return to Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center for a Senior Day dual meet with the University of Wisconsin. Action against the University of Iowa is set to take place on Friday, Oct. 31, at 1:30 PM.
