Mavericks Dominate Mustangs in Road Dual

MARSHALL, Minn. — Minnesota State decisively defeated Southwest Minnesota State with a score of 203-91, highlighted by sophomore Kaitlyn Hettiararchchy’s diving victory and multiple first-place finishes from swimmers including freshman Gracie Bartholomew and sophomore Averi Larsen.

The Mavericks now own a 7-1 record in dual action.

“We’re coming off the toughest phase of the season with the ramp up in training intensity since September and a grueling stretch of meets these last eight weeks,” head coach Nathan Owens said. “That said, our ladies are fighting hard in their races and competing on the boards. Everyone is fairly broken down physically, but they’re getting stronger and improving each week. 

“We’re exciting to give them some solid rest over the Thanksgiving break and see what they can do rested at the mid-season meet. From what I see, we’re on-track for some great performances.”

Sophomore Kaylie Gibbs contributed significantly in the 1000-yard freestyle by finishing first with a time of 11:11.15, earning nine points for Minnesota State. She maintained consistent splits throughout the race, showcasing her endurance.

Sophomore Averi Larsen excelled in the 100-yard breaststroke, clocking in at 1:07.49 to secure first place and 9 points. She also delivered a strong performance in the 100-yard IM, finishing first with a time of 1:00.07.

Sophomore Sydney Pippert showed her versatility with a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle, posting a time of 54.58. She also contributed to the team victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay, swimming the second leg with a split of 24.38.

Freshman Parker Schmieding was impressive in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing first with a time of 59.70. She also anchored the B team in the 200-yard freestyle relay, contributing to their second-place finish with a split of 25.63.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Hettiararchchy dominated in the 1-meter diving event, scoring 230.20 to earn first place and nine points, contributing crucial points to the team’s overall victory. She also took first in the 3-meter diving event with a score of 213.25.

The Mavericks will compete at the Augustana Invite on December 4, 2025, in Sioux Falls, S.D., with the event commencing at 9 a.m.
