St. Thomas prepares for Summit League Championship at First Chance Invite

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The University of St. Thomas swim and dive program continued its preparation for the 2026 Summit League Swim and Dive Championships. The Tommies opened their final competition before the conference championship at the University of Minnesota’s First Chance Meet. St. Thomas saw several impressive swims on day one of the competition, including three individual wins.

WOMEN’S RESULTS:
The Tommie women won two races in Minneapolis Friday evening and saw several swimmers earn top-10 finishes.  

  • Jordyn Davis (Cambridge, Wis.) continued to dominate in the 100 backstroke, winning the race for the second straight week with a time of 54.61. In fact, St. Thomas earned the top six places in the race with Grace Hehr (Mason City, Iowa / Newman Catholic), Willow Larsen (Fairfield, Iowa / Fairfield), Makenna Monday (Grafton, Wis. / Cedarburg), Eden Hill (Woodbury, Minn. / Two Rivers) and Jane Busboom (Blair, Neb. / Fremont) finishing second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.  
  • The Tommies finished 1-2-3 in the 100 breaststroke, with Izabelle Schwartz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) winning the race with a time of 1:05.01. Amber Hess (Kohler, Wis. / Kohler) and Brooke Gothard (Golden, Colo. / Wheat Ridge) finished in second and third respectively.
  • Madeline Elseth (Grand Forks, N.D. / Central) had a career day in the pool, earning a second place finish in the 500 freestyle thanks to collegiate career best time of 5:17.24.
  • Like Elseth, Ava Williamson (Minot, N.D. / Minot) posted a collegiate career best, finishing third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:14.53.
  • Ellie Undem (Chisago City, Minn. / Chisago Lakes) finished fifth in the 50 freestyle thanks to a time of 23.32.
  • Several other St. Thomas swimmers earned top finishes Friday. Click here for full results.

MEN’S RESULTS
The Tommies won one individual race Friday evening and put together a slew of top-10 finishes at the First Chance Meet.

  • Thomson Yatso (Milwaukee, Wis. / Shorewood) won the 200 IM in impressive fashion, as he was the only athlete to swim a sub 2:00 time. The junior won the race with a time of 1:57.20.
  • Philip Jensen (Hastings, Minn. / Hastings) was the highest non-Gopher finisher in the 100 backstroke, claiming third place with a time of 49.10. Lucas Becker (Carver, Minn. / Chanhassen) and Anthony Newton (Naperville, Ill. / Nequa Valley) earned top-10 finishes as well.
  • Jensen Richard (Rochester, Minn. / Century) was the Tommies highest finisher in the 100 breaststroke, finishing sixth with at time of 55.87.
  • Carter Fask (Elmhurst, Ill. / Fenwick) earned a top-5 finish in the 50 freestyle thanks to his time of 20.65.
  • Several other St. Thomas swimmers earned top finishes Friday. Click here for full results.

UP NEXT
Day two of the First Chance Meet will commence on February 7 for the Tommie swimmers. The St. Thomas divers will also compete at the UNO Diving Meet.
