Men’s Swimming & Diving: Macalester Competes at First Chance Meet in Preparation for MIAC Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester College men’s swimming & diving team prepped for next week’s MIAC Championships at the First Chance Meet, hosted by the University of Minnesota Friday and Saturday. No team scores were kept. Also, the divers competed at the Dodd Road Diving Invitational on Saturday at Carleton.

In Friday’s 200-yard individual medley, first year Isaac Snaza (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) placed third with a time of 2:30.67, followed by junior Ryan Mickelborough (Andover, Minn./Andover) in fifth place (2:14.94). In the 100-yard backstroke, first year Edward Barnes (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) finished ninth in 56.59, and sophomore Gunnar Ray (Tacoma, Wash./Stadium) was 12th in 59.18. Junior Thomas Moore (Philadelphia, Pa./Science Leadership Academy) took 12th in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.58.

On Saturday, four Scots swam well in the 100-yard freestyle. Senior TJ Palli (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) placed second with a time of 47.55. Senior Casey Meretta (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) took fifth (48.83), Barnes tied for sixth (48.96) and sophomore Kean Pajarillaga (Saipan, Marianas Pacific/Grace Christian Academy) was ninth (49.10). Senior Will St. John (McGaheysville, Va./East Rockingham) finished second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:14.21. Snaza took seventh in the 100-yard butterfly in 55.90. The Scots’ 400-yard freestyle relay team of first year Mason Saunders (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights), junior Peter Simpson (Grinnell, Iowa/Grinnell), Ray and first year Spencer Laga (Milwaukee, Wis./Rufus King) placed fourth with a time of 3:31.37.

At the Dodd Road Diving Invitational on Saturday, senior Dylan Herlihy (Reading, Mass./Phillips Academy Andover) won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events with scores of 201.85 and 178.40, respectively.

The MIAC Championships begin on Wednesday, Feb. 11 at the University of Minnesota’s Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
