Season and lifetime bests abound on Day 2 of First Chance Meet

MINNEAPOLIS – The Carleton College men’s swimming & diving team wrapped up its time at the First Chance Meet hosted by the University of Minnesota. This unscored competition served as the final competition of the season for nine members of the roster that are not expected to compete at next week’s MIAC Championships.
 
On Saturday, that group totaled 13 individual swims, with nine new collegiate bests established as well as four additional season bests.
 
Will Clausman set a season best in the 400-yard IM with his time of 4:29.09, while Gabe Rose established a personal best 4:33.99
 
Austin Mohr led the Knights’ entries in the 100-yard freestyle, trimming 3.7 seconds off his previous collegiate best as he touched the wall at 49.05. Will Tan (50.86), Charlie Scott (52.10), and Tommy Harrold (53.98) also established new personal bests. James Chen set a season best of 50.34.
 
Erik Sun sliced six-plus seconds of his previous collegiate best in the 200-yard backstroke as he covered the distance in 2:02.13.
 
Rose and Scott set new collegiate bests in the 100-yard butterfly, touching the wall at 55.24 and 57.07, respectively.
 
Chen set a season best of 1:51.64 in the 200-yard freestyle, while Nathan Zhang registered a time of 2:23.33 in the 200-yard breaststroke to trim more than eight seconds off his season best in the event.
 
Clausman capped his career with a time of 17:26.26 in the 1650-yard freestyle. That was a season best by more than 56 seconds and a lifetime best by 3.4 seconds.
 
Sun, Tan, Mohr, and Chen combined on a second-place result in the 400-yard freestyle relay as they combined on a time of 3:19.42
 
Sun also participated in the 50-yard time trial and posted a collegiate-best time of 22.59.
 
While the swimmers were competing in the Twin Cities, the team’s divers competed at the Dodd Road Diving Invite. Hans Anderson won the 3-meter 11-dive competition by nearly 100 points as he posted a score of 5:04.70. Jesse Lindholm registered six dive scores of 183.60 (1-meter) and 176.65 (3-meter), while Charlie Ruppe scored 116.90 and 163.90, respectively, in the same events.
 
Up Next for the Knights
Carleton will compete at the MIAC Championships to be held Feb. 11-14 at the Jean Freeman Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
