
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester College women’s swimming & diving team swam well on the first day of the MIAC Swimming & Diving Championships, held at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center Wednesday night. The Scots scored 62 points in two relays and are in fifth place, two points behind St. Olaf and Carleton who are tied for third.
The Scots opened Day 1 with the 200-yard medley relay team of first year Kayla Chapman (Happy Valley, Ore./LaSalle Catholic College Prep), senior Izzy Uhlhorn-Thornton (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais), sophomore Amalia Shields (Madison, Wis./Madison West), and senior Emma Henry (Chesapeake, Va./Oscar Smith) taking fifth with a time of 1:46.51.
In the 800-yard freestyle relay, the foursome of Shields, sophomores Maya Tellez (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) and Molly Nuckolls (Lawrence, Kan./Free State), and senior Hannah Zurn (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) finished second with a time of 7:44.64. The performance, which was .51 off of the school record, earned the team All-MIAC honors for finishing in the top three.
The MIAC Championships continue on Thursday, with sessions at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
