Women’s Swimming & Diving: Uhlhorn-Thornton Leads Macalester’s All-MIAC Honorees

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Eleven members of the Macalester College women’s swimming & diving team turned in All-MIAC or honorable mention performances at the MIAC Swimming & Diving Championships, held this past weekend. The top three finishers in each event were named All-MIAC, with the next three finishers in the individual events and the fourth-place finisher in the relays receiving All-MIAC honorable mention.

Senior Izzy Uhlhorn-Thornton (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) won both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke for the third consecutive year in her final MIAC Championships. On Friday, she broke her own school record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.66, then captured the 200 breaststroke on Saturday in 2:20.99, .16 seconds away from her school record in that event.

Sophomore Molly Nuckolls (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) won the Scots’ other individual MIAC title, taking first in the 200-yard butterfly with a school-record time of 2:08.63. Nuckolls also earned All-MIAC honors in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:10.73. Senior Hannah Zurn (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) finished right behind Nuckolls in third with a time of 5:11.50 for All-MIAC status.

Sophomore Maya Téllez (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) took second in the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.38) and was third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.01) in a pair of All-MIAC performances. Senior Emma Henry (Chesapeake, Va./Oscar Smith) finished second in the 100-yard butterfly in 58.12, and first year Jay Young (Arlington, Va.) placed second in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:52.07. Senior Nadia Lanz (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) took third in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:38.47, and first year Ainsley Kashatus (Washington, D.C./Holton Arms School) placed third in 3-meter diving with a score of 430.25.

Also, the Scots’ 800-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Amalia Shields (Madison, Wis./Madison West), Téllez, Nuckolls and Zurn finished second with a time of 7:44.64.

In addition to earning All-MIAC accolades, Henry tied for fourth in the 50-yard freestyle (24.24), Zurn was fourth in the 200 butterfly (2:10.55), Uhlhorn-Thornton took fifth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:12.27), Lanz finished fifth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:08.20), and Shields finished sixth in the 200 freestyle (1:56.71) to receive All-MIAC honorable mention. Others earning honorable mention include first year Poppy Wedding (Madison, Wis./Middleton), who finished fifth in the 400 IM (4:45.24), and first year Ella Franklin (Tucson, Ariz./University), who placed sixth in the 1650 free (18:19.63).

Macalester scored 575.5 points and finished fourth in the team standings at the MIAC Championships.
