Every two years the Minnesota State High School league looks at enrollment data from schools across the state and determines class and section for all sports. Here’s the changes going into the next two year cycle. Details of the process can be found on the MSHSL site.

2025 Boys High School Preview: Section 6A

Team Outlook
Grand Rapids graduated some serious points, but probably not enough to impact their chances of repeating as section champions in 2025. Senior Joe Loney will lead the way returning as section champion in both the 200 and 500 Free. Loney also scored some state points in those events with 15th place finishes in each in 2024. Sophomore Zak Vidmar also had a stellar section meet with a 2nd place finish in the 200 IM and was section champion in the 100 Breast. At the state meet, Vidmar placed 15th in the Breast. Leif Wyland returns for his senior year after finishing 3rd in the 200 IM and 2nd in the 500 Free at the 2024 section meet and will be looking to get some state points this season. Grand Rapids brings back several other top 8 section finishers for this season with seniors Kasey Cowan, Will Skaudis, and Matt Phillips as well as juniors Max Connelly, Jack Kellin, and Graham Verke. Divers a-plenty for Grand Rapids as well with senior David Aultman placing 4th, freshman Dylan Aultman placing 5th and 8th grader Wyatt Hammerlund placing 6th. With the top 2 finishers from 2024 graduated, there’s a shot for 3 divers from this team to make it to state.
Other Notables
Mesabi East brings back their own double section event champion with junior Cole Layman. Layman won both the 200 IM and 100 Fly last year and scored a 14th and 15th place finish at the state meet in those events. Senior Alex Leete returns after placing 4th in both the 200 Free and 500 Free in 2024 and will be looking for a trip to state in both events this season. Senior Zade Baker placed 7th in the 200 IM and 6th in the 100 Back and senior Connor Feldt added a 5th place finish in the 200 IM to round out the Mesabi East core group. Junior Aiden Johnson is the top returning diver in the section, placing 3rd last season. He will be the favorite for section champion this year and to score some state points for the squad.
Rock Ridge graduated a lot of its horsepower in 2024, but there is youth coming up through the ranks. Freshman Aaron Spiering placed 9th in the 200 Free and 8th in the 500 Free last season and will be looking to make the jump into the top 4 this season.
International Falls will be led by senior Brendyn Scholler and junior Connor Tomczak. Scholler placed 4th in the 50 Free and 5th in the 100 back, while Tomczak scored 7th place finishes in the 200 Free and 100 Fly.
Proctor-Esko will return senior Garek Pilinski, who finished 5th in the 100 Breast in 2024. Freshman Levi Raisanen also had a strong section meet last year, finishing 9th in both the 100 Fly and 100 Back. He will be looking to crack top 8 in both this season.
Chisholm senior Nathan Splinter was the top scorer for the squad at the section meet in 2024. He placed 7th in the 500 Free and held spots on all three relays.
2025 Boys High School Preview: Section 4A

Team Outlook
St. Thomas Academy is looking as strong as ever and though the section title was never in doubt for 2025, the state title might be in reach. Senior Dane Dow placed 2nd in the 200 IM and 3rd in the 500 Free and sophomore Luke Mechtel placed 4th in the 50 Free and 3rd in the 100 Breast at the state meet in 2024 to lead the way for the Tommies. Senior Sherman Holmstadt scored a 9th place finish in the 100 Back, junior Kayden Greely was 9th in the 50 Free and 100 Breast, and sophomore Leo Ritzenthaler was 13th in the 200 Free and 10th in the 500 Free for the remainder of their 2024 state points. Senior Vincent Audette was a state qualifier in the 200 Free last season and will look to crack the top 16 this year. Senior Charlie Bruner also was a state qualifier in the 200 IM in 2024. Junior Leo Ritzenthaler was another state qualifier last season for the Tommies, qualifying in both the 200 and 500 Free.
Other Notables
Chisago Lakes senior Nate Bear placed 4th in the 200 Free and 8th in the 100 Fly at last year’s section meet and fellow senior Tanner Betts scored a 6th place finish in the 200 Free and 100 Back. Freshmen divers Austin Warner and Talan Koester-Radmann both qualified for the state meet in 2024, finishing 3rd and 4th at the section meet.
Como Park senior Kyle Kosiak will look to improve on his stellar 2024 season where he was section champion in the 100 Fly and section runner up in the 100 Back. At the state meet, Kosiak placed 6th and 14th in those events. Sophomore Joey Schumacher also had a great section meet last year. Schumacher placed 4th in the 50 Free and 3rd in the 100 Free in 2024.
Fridley continues to build on a young team. Quinn Henrikson placed 10th in the 50 Free last season as well as 4th in the 100 Fly. Wyatt Engelman finished 8th in the 200 IM and 10th in the 100 Breast.
Humbolt-Washinton-OWL diver Donovan Timmerman will return for his senior year as section champion. At the state meet, Timmerman placed 18th and will look to grab some state points this season.
Columbia Heights senior Ameer Alt Daoud is the top returning swimmer for his squad this season. Last year, he placed 10th in the 500 Free and 9th in the 100 Back at the section meet.
Hill Murray continues to build its new squad and junior Aiden Kelly will return as the top performer from last year. Kelly finished 16th in the 50 Free and 5th in the 100 Breast.
St. Paul Johnson and St. Paul Harding will look to continue to add numbers to their squads and build around their youth.
Minneapolis Edison senior Colin O’Brien finished 8th in the 50 Free and 9th in the 100 Fly last season and will look for a double top 8 finish in his events in 2025.
2025 Boys High School Preview: Section 3A

Team Outlook
In 2024, 43 points separated 1st and 3rd in the team standings at sections with Hutchinson coming out on top and scoring a 3rd place finish at the state meet. They will be the favorites in this section in 2025 and will be led by senior Carter Johnson. Johnson was section champion in the 200 and 500 Free and placed 4th in both at the state meet. Fellow senior Anthony Witte also scored well for the Tigersharks last season, placing 4th in the 100 fly and 3rd in the 100 Back. At state, he was 10th and 8th in those events, respectively. Another senior, Eric Oberg will be a strong contributor this season as well. Oberg placed 4th in the 200 IM and 7th in the 100 Free at sections. Senior Breaststroke specialist Grayson O’Neill placed 3rd last year at section in that event and 11th at the state meet. Freshman Leyton Yerks looks to build on his strong 8th grade performances in 2025. Yerks placed 5th in the 200 Free and 2nd in the 500 Free at sections and scored a 9th place finish in the 500 at state.
While Monticello graduated significant points, they still have a strong core of seniors and top ranked diving crew. Senior Ethan Bad Heart Bull placed 5th in the 100 Fly and 4th in the 100 Back at sections. He would go on to place 13th in the Back at the state meet. Fellow senior Tyler Grue placed 7th in the 200 IM and 5th in the 100 Breast at the section meet in 2024. Sophomore Sam Martin had a strong section meet last year, finishing 5th in the 500 Free and 7th in the 100 Back. On the diving side, the Magic return the 1st and 3rd place divers from 2024. Senior Gabe McDermott was section champion and placed 4th at state and sophomore Noah Miller placed 3rd at sections and 12th at state.
DWM also graduates some top points and strong relay swimmers from last year’s class but can be sneaky with their depth in both swimming and diving. Senior Sam Daniels placed 4th at sections in the 50 and 100 Free. At the state meet, he was 16th and 13th in those events. Junior MacKay Hoglund placed 4th in the 200 Free and 3rd in the 500 Free at sections in 2024. He would go on to place 12th and 13th respectively at the state meet. Teammate junior Luke Grosshuesch placed 4th in the 500 Free and 6th in the 100 Breast at sections and freshman Henry Becker was 8th in the 200 IM. Junior diver Oscar Hoglund placed 2nd at sections and scored an 8th place finish at the state meet.
Other Notables
Montevideo senior Nolan Christopher placed 3rd in the 200 Free and 7th in the 500 Free at sections in 2024 and will be the top returning point scorer for the squad. At the state meet, Christopher finished 11th in the 200 Free. Senior Tyson Brandt placed 7th in diving and sophomore Hayden Bloom finished just outside the top 8 with a 9th place finish in the 100 Breast.
St. Cloud Apollo sophomore Charlie Bobick lit up sections last year, winning the 200 IM and placing 2nd in the 100 Breast. At the state meet, he finished 5th in the IM and 10th in the Breast. Another sophomore, Amittai Preisler, had a strong section meet in 2024, finishing 6th in the 200 Free and 7th in the 100 Fly. Orion Preisler was 6th in diving and will be in the running for a top 4 spot in 2025.
Willmar senior Evan Wallestad returns after placing 8th in the 100 Fly and 100 Back in 2024. He will be joined by fellow senior David Lammers, who placed 5th in the 200 IM. Junior Soren Newberg will also help lead the way after finishing 7th in the 200 Free and 11th in the 500 Free last season.
Princeton junior Matthew Fouquette is the top returning performer for his squad. Fouquette placed 3rd in the 100 Fly and 10th in the 100 Back. He went on to place 11th in the Fly at state.
Dassel-Cokato-Litchfield has a core of seniors, Will Carlson and Mattias Slinden, along with juniors Dominic Borg and Matthew Defries. Carlson placed 9th in the 100 Back, Slinden 10th in the 200 Free, Borg 11th in both the 50 and 100 Free, and Defries 12th in the 100 Free.
2025 Boys High School Preview: Section 1AA

Team Outlook
Lakeville South was the winner in a fairly close battle in 2024, but it looks like Rochester Century will be the favorite in 2025.
Century senior Owen Kelly is the top retuning point scorer from the section meet, notching runner up finishes in both the 50 and 100 Free at sections last year. At the state meet, Kelly placed 13th and 15th respectively. Junior Grady Bargfrede will be an impact swimmer this year along with fellow juniors Eli Holmes, Andrew Linden, and Will Truskowski. Bargfrede placed 4th in the 200 IM and 3rd in the 100 Breast at sections last year, while Holmes finished 4th in the 200 Free and 5th in the 100 Free. Linden scored a 3rd place finish in the 100 Free and 2nd in the 100 Back and Truskowski placed 6th in both the 100 Fly and 100 Breast. Sophomore Grant Garrison also had a strong section meet last year with a 3rd place finish in the 500 Free and 6th place finish in the 100 Back. Sophomore diver Silas Wagstaff qualified for the state meet with a 3rd place finish at sections. At the state meet, it was Bargfrede leading the way with a 9th place finish in the 200 IM and 8th place finish in the 100 Breast. Wagstaff would finish 12th in diving.
Lakeville South graduates a lot of the core from the 2024 season and will look to Junior Grady Evenson to lead the way this year. Evenson was a double winner at the section meet last season in the 100 Fly and 100 Back and went on to place 3rd and 6th respectively at the state meet. Senior Isaac DeMaster fared well last season with a 6th place finish in the 200 IM and 5th place finish in the 100 Breast at the section meet. Junior Brendan Mattson also was a strong contributor with a 5th place finish in the 200 IM and 3rd place finish in the 100 Back at the section meet.
Other Notables
Lakeville North finished third as a team at the section meet last season and will be looking to build on that performance. Senior Jonah Hoffman was a double event winner at the section meet in the 200 Free and 500 Free. At the state meet, he would finish 6th and 5th respectively. Senior Aaron Larkin swam to an 8th place finish in the 50 Free and 4th place finish in the 100 Breast at the section meet last year and senior Isaac Snaza scored a 6th place finish in the 200 Free and 4th place finish in the 500 Free. North also brings back a pair of state qualifying divers this season in senior Alex Byer and junior Caleb Baldeshwiler. Byer placed 2nd at the section meet and 10th at the state meet and Baldeshwiler placed 4th at the section meet.
The Farmington trio of senior Adam Moorlach, and juniors Justin Raymond and Hantruy Nguyen will lead the way for the squad in the 2025 season. Moorlach finished 6th in the 50 Free and 8th in the 100 Free, Raymond 8th in the 200 Free and 5th in the 500 Free, and Nguyen 7th in the 200 Free and 500 Free.
Rochester Mayo seniors Nikhil Kaufman and Neil Tollefson return after a successful 2024 section meet. Kaufman placed 7th in both the 200 IM and 100 Breast and Tollefson placed 7th in the 50 Free and 100 Fly. Sophomore William Leasure will add some strength to the squad this year. Leasure placed 5th in the 200 Free and 6th in the 100 Free last season.
Owatonna will be looking to reload after graduating some of their top 2024 performers. Junior Logan Flynn returns after an 8th place finish in the 200 IM in 2024 to lead the way for the squad.
New Prague seniors Jacob Bisek and Brendan Panka will look to build on their strong finish to their 2024 seasons. Bisek placed 4th in the 50 Free and 2nd in the 500 Free at sections while Panka placed 2nd in the 200 Free and 3rd in the 100 Fly. At the state meet, Panka placed 11th in the 200 Free and 13th in the 100 Fly.
Rochester John Marshall will also be in rebuilding mode after graduating the majority of their section points. Senior Maxwell Nguyen placed 14th last year in the 100 Breast.
2025 Boys High School Preview: Section 1A

Team Outlook
Northfield certainly graduated some top points and some relay power but it looks like they have plenty in the tank to repeat as Section 1A Champions in 2025. Senior Josh Kraby will lead the way coming off his state championship in the 100 Back and runner-up finish at state in the 100 Fly. Senior Peyton Truman also had an impressive 2024 season, winning the 100 Breast at sections and finishing second in the 200 IM. At the state meet, Truman placed 7th in the 200 IM and 6th in the 100 Breast. Another senior, Nick Scheglowski, placed 2nd in the 200 Free and 5th in the 100 Free at the section meet. He would go on to place 10th in the 200 Free at state. Junior Will Udelhofen will also be a top line swimmer for the Gators this season. Udelhofen returns as section champion in the 200 Free and placed 3rd in the 500 Free. At the state meet, he finished 9th and 14th respectively. Other key returnees are senior Oliver Momberg, junior Rouke Bennett, and sophomore James Graham.
Mankato East will feature junior Elliot Bartell returning as section champion in the 50 Free and 100 Fly. Bartell was the state champion in the 100 Fly. Senior Spencer Flitter placed 4th last season in a highly competitive diving section. Flitter placed 7th at the state meet.
Other Notables
Winona sophomore Cordel Ruppert will return after an impressive freshman season. Ruppert placed 3rd in the 200 Free and 2nd in the 500 Free at the section meet. He would go on to finish 16th in the 500 at the state meet. Joining him will be sophomore Matthew Baumgartner, who placed 8th in the 100 Free and 3rd in the 100 Breast at sections as well as senior Matthew Brisco, who placed 7th in the 200 IM and 100 Breast.
Austin will be led by junior Brent Dahl. Dahl was a double winner at the section meet in the 200 IM and 500 Free. At the state meet he placed 3rd and 5th in those events, respectively. Senior Lucas Myers returns after finishing 7th in both the 50 Free and 100 Fly at sections. Joining him is sophomore Hunter Peters, who placed 8th in the 200 Free and 4th in the 100 Breast at the section meet.
Simley junior Vincent Evangelista will be the top returning point scorer for his squad. Evangelista scored a 3rd place finish in the 200 IM and a 5th place finish in the 100 Back at the section meet.
Red Wing will return the top two divers in the section with juniors Zachary Mikkelson and Laden Nelson. Mikkelson placed 2nd at the state meet and Nelson placed 9th. Senior Ethan Ihrke was the 5th place finisher at sections in the 50 Free and placed 3rd in the 100 Fly. At state, he placed 7th in the 100 Fly
Faribault sophomore diver Asher Ferris placed 3rd at the section meet and 10th at the state meet in 2024.
Mankato West will continue to build on their young 2024 squad. Sophomore Isaac Sanderson returns after placing 6th in the 200 Free and 7th in the 500 Free at the 2024 section meet.
