Section 1A Recognition Spotlight: Avery Schuh (Mankato East)

from coach Greg Summers

Mankato East senior Avery Schuh has been part of the Cougar squad for 5 seasons and is a solid representative as a Varsity member of the team.  Avery is a talented student-athlete and couldn’t be a better representative of hard work, dedication, and an example of what these things can bring an individual who also is blessed with talent.  As a student she is a proud member of NHS, bringing an above 4.0 GPA to the team, as well as representing the school in groups like Link Crew (guidance for incoming freshmen), Project 4 Teens, and Student Council.

Over these years on the swim team, Avery has been a high-quality sprinter representing the team in multiple relays and the 50/100 free at the state meet.  For the 2023 Section 1A meet, she also became the Section Champion in the 50 free!  Schuh has been a leading member of the team and has established herself on the record board in several events as well as a leader on the team’s historical Top 25 list of events.

When asked about some of her favorite memories on the team, several things came to mind, however, one thing stands out the most.  “It has been such a great experience to be a part of the team and competing with my sister.  We can push each other but also have grown so much closer than I would have imagined.  It is even better that this year we went from a 2022 state where I qualified in one event to having both individual events and the relay, including my sister,” says Avery.  Her 9th-grade sister, Cami, included, “I definitely am proud of our accomplishments as sisters as well as our growth within the team.  It is so cool to be able to compete against each other but also together on things like our 200 free relay going to state.” These ladies have helped move the bar forward for the team in terms of expectations, work ethic, and looking for ways to improve as athletes.  Not only are they swimmers, but both compete in Track and Field as Varsity members.

Looking at this team, the landscape of work ethic, expectations, and standards has skyrocketed through the years.  Coach Greg Summers says, “Each year we have been able to grow as a team and as individuals.  I am most proud of the constant desire to hold each other accountable, the passion for community, and the expectations of bringing our best day in and day out.”  The Cougars finished the 2023 season with a 6-4 dual meet record, a few notable invite wins at Fridley, and the home Cougar Relays event alongside True Team 3rd place and Sections 4th place finishes.  Moving into state the team will have Avery Schuh in the 50 free and 100 free. Also, the 200 free relay of Cami Schuh, Brittan Hoffman, Emma Born, and Avery Schuh.

It sounds like you’ve had a heck of a high school swimming career Avery and we would like to join your coaches in recognizing you for all you’ve given to your team and to the sport. Vibe on Avery!!!
